His father (also Robert) of The Diamond, Monaghan, was a Linen and Woolen Draper. Probably born in Monaghan, he studied medicine at Trinity College, Dublin. He first practised in Letterkenny, where he met his future wife. On moving to Lifford as Doctor to the County Infirmary, they first lived in "Ballyduff" and later he built Combermore, a large house on the outskirts of Lifford. With the marriage of his daughter Martha to John Cochrane, this home passed to the Cochranes on his death.
